Gate Operators/Access Control

Gates/Gate Operators/Access Control

Gate operators vary widely from the $400 toy you find in many big box stores to the huge hydraulic operators which will nearly move a freight train. Often the gate operator family is found under "gate operating devices" or "access control". Gate operators can open a gate by swinging, sliding, moving it straight up and the vertical lift types (a pivot point at the bottom corner allows the gate to move upward on a vertical arc in cases where there is limited room and the gate can't swing or slide).

There is a huge demand for residential and farm/ranch driveway gates with gate operating devices as the prices have come down and the technology has made the operator easily programmable and user friendly.

The solar charger technology has advanced so cloudy days are not as dreaded now. The new solar panels actually trickle charge even on a cloudy day as ambient light creates some voltage input. Batteries are much more efficient and better able to accept the solar charge as well. We always use a regulator between the solar panel and the battery to keep the battery from overcharging, thus extending the battery life.

We can now install cellular telephone entry devices which eliminates the need for a "land Line" and associated cabling. This gives the homeowner the ability to see and speak to a visitor at the gate from pretty much anywhere! The gate can be opened and/or closed using a cell phone or land line from far, far away.

Some manufacturers have developed the ability for a "master/slave" setup (double gates - each gate leaf with an operator) so the master control board can communicate with the slave operator wirelessly. No more tunneling under or sawing through the driveway.

Radio Receiver

Radio receivers, wireless and wired keypads along with remote transmitters make entry a breeze and free exit devices buried next to the driveway 100 ft. or so from the gate allows the gate to open as a vehicle drives by. Most newer vehicles have built-in transmitters which can be programmed to open the gate and the garage door.

Commercial operators come in a huge array of brands, sizes and power so each access point can be evaluated and the proper unit recommended. Factors such as gate size and weight, desired opening/closing speed, environmental conditions and expected daily cycles are used to make the operator recommendation and proposal.

Safety is ALWAYS at the top of mind when we design a customer's system. UL-325 is the safety standard for gate operating systems (http://www.ul325.com/website.pdf).

The gate operators have built-in sensing devices which allow the user to adjust the amount of pressure to stop the gate when it contacts a vehicle or pedestrian. Photo eyes are often used to stop gate travel when the beam is interrupted. Commercial applications usually have safety loops at the inside and outside of the gate to keep the gate from closing on a vehicle as it sits or moves through the gate opening.
